Two colleagues make separate phone calls, seen through the windows of a building opposite. A red frame marks the viewer’s position. The figures’ different expressions leave the content of their conversations open to interpretation. An encrypted message within the painting refers to the workplace where the artist spent time.

Technique

Successive window frames organise the perspective. The interior is described in detail, while the roof outside is left comparatively plain. A few strokes establish each face and expression.

Inspiration

Drawn from the artist’s experience of a workplace, the painting considers observation and privacy: what can be understood about a conversation from a distance, and what remains unknown.
